Creating with Values
Secondary Service Learning
April was a month with many Service Learning activities for Secondary students and staff at Pan-American School. Students from grades 6-9 participated in their second community service trip. Each group was accompanied by different teachers and staff members, and everyone had a role in serving others. The 6th through 8th grade service learning activities took place in different schools. They spent time playing with students, developed didactic materials for their classrooms and led an arts and crafts workshop where they helped students develop new valuable skills. They also had the opportunity to share a snack. The 9th grade visited different elderly homes where they shared games, conversations, snacks and led workshops. These were enriching and meaningful experiences for all the community members that participated. We are looking forward to further our learning through service!

THIRD GRADE STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENTS
Third Grade was able to experience the Costarrican culture at a deeper level through our Masquerades Day Celebration Parade, in which students learned national folktales in class and created their own folktale. Moreover, students were able to represent their folktale on a masquerade using reusable and recyclable materials and parade around the school to celebrate the tradition and their creativity. We felt tremendously proud of our students' work and enthusiasm towards learning new cultural traditions.
Furthermore, students have been sharing their knowledge with creativity and enthusiasm when working collaboratively. Having students work collaboratively with their peers fosters good relationships among them, helps other children to look at the concept from another point of view, and increases their respect for each other. It has been enriching to observe their positive attitude, their eagerness to learn, and their sense of pride as they become owners of their learning.
RIGHT ON THE MAP PROJECT
Third grade students have worked on a project called "Right on the Map." They investigated about fossils, learned about the different types of fossils, and explored how to determine the age of a fossil. They also studied maps; they learned how to locate a country and to investigate where fossils were discovered in different places in North, South, and Central America. In addition to this, students were able to learn different symbols and their meaning on maps and how to properly use them and show their abbreviations. It has been a marvelous journey throughout the year to have our third grade students become creators of meaningful and significant projects.
